Desert tours and activities from Marrakech: every option, side by side

Every Marrakech desert tour we run starts the same way: out of the city, up towards the High Atlas, and on to the edge of the sand. What changes is how far you go. Agafay, about 45 minutes away, is a stony desert for an afternoon and a sunset. Zagora, roughly 360 km south, has small dunes and fits into two days. Merzouga, where the Erg Chebbi dunes rise to around 150 m, is about 560 km away — three days at the very least, four if you'd rather not spend whole days in the car.

Below you'll find every route that starts in Marrakech, including the one-way crossing to Fes, plus two shorter activities close to the city: an afternoon in Agafay and a sunrise hot-air balloon flight. Match them to the days you actually have.

Which tour fits your days?

Start with the number of days, then look at the dunes column. Tall sand dunes mean Merzouga; anything shorter means a different kind of desert.

Around Zagora the dunes are low; the big ones in that region, Erg Chegaga, lie beyond M'Hamid and need extra days. If you're unsure which desert to choose, our Merzouga desert guide explains what Erg Chebbi is like on the ground.

What every desert tour includes

The routes differ, the basics don't. On every overnight tour you can expect:

  • Pickup and drop-off at your riad or hotel
  • An air-conditioned vehicle and a driver who knows the road
  • Dinners and breakfasts (lunches are not included)
  • A camel ride to or from camp, or a 4x4 transfer if you prefer
  • Time to stop for photos, tea or a walk through a village
  • Fuel and accommodation: hotel or guesthouse nights and a desert camp

Usually not included: lunches, drinks, optional local guides at sites, entrance fees and tips. Each tour page lists the details.

Private tour or small group?

Every overnight route on this page runs both ways. The road and the camp are the same; what changes is who you share the vehicle with and how much say you have over the day.

Private

Your own vehicle and driver, on the date you choose. Want to wander through Kasbah Amridil in the Skoura palm grove, or spend longer at the Rissani market? Just say so. Good for families, couples and anyone who likes to set their own pace.

Priced per group: €200 per day for your private vehicle and driver, plus €45 per person per night for accommodation. For 2 travellers on the 3-day Merzouga tour (2 nights) that comes to €780 in total, or €390 per person.

Planning a route that isn't listed here? Hire a private driver in Morocco and build it day by day.

Small group

You share the vehicle with other travellers on a fixed itinerary, which keeps the price down. Departures run every day, with a maximum of 17 travellers. A good choice if you travel alone or don't mind company around the campfire.

How we choose the desert camps

The camp is where the trip either works or doesn't, so we're picky. We look for camps set inside the dunes rather than next to the road, close enough that the camel ride takes you properly into the sand, and far enough from the next camp that the night is quiet.

Our tours use a standard camp, with electricity and shared bathrooms (no Wi-Fi). You can upgrade to a luxury camp, where each tent has its own private bathroom and there is Wi-Fi. From November to February nights can drop close to 0 °C, so warm blankets matter as much as the view.

Desert tours from Marrakech: your questions

How many days do I need for a desert tour from Marrakech?

For the tall dunes of Merzouga, plan three days; four if you want shorter drives. Two days takes you to Zagora and its small dunes. With one day, the Agafay desert day trip gives you the landscape and a sunset without the long road.

Can I see the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?

Not the sand dunes. Merzouga is about 560 km away and Zagora about 360 km, so neither works in a day. Agafay is the desert you can reach and return from the same evening, but it is stony, with no dunes.

Merzouga or Zagora: what's the difference?

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, with dunes up to around 150 m. Zagora's dunes are small, but it's closer and fits into two days. Our guide to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi covers the bigger option in detail.

What is the best time of year for a Sahara tour?

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. From November to February the days are sunny but desert nights can approach 0 °C; in summer, afternoons often pass 40 °C. The Sahara night guide goes month by month.

Are desert tours suitable for children?

Yes. Children usually love the camel ride, and a camel guide leads the animal on foot. On a private tour we add stops to break up the long driving days; the 4-day route is the gentlest. Children pay 5% less than the adult price.
