Overview
This 3-day Marrakech desert tour is the shortest way to reach the real dunes of the Sahara and come back without rushing the parts in between. Merzouga sits about 560 km from Marrakech, so we split the road over two days: first the High Atlas and the kasbah country, then the gorges and the oases, arriving at the edge of Erg Chebbi in time to ride out to camp before sunset.
You sleep one night in the Dades valley and one night in the dunes. The third day is the long one: an early start after sunrise over the sand, then the full drive back to Marrakech, where you arrive in the evening. If you would rather avoid that, the 4-day Merzouga tour covers the same ground at an easier pace, and the Marrakech to Fes desert tour lets you finish in Fes instead.
Highlights
- Cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, about 2,260 m up

- Sleep in the Dades valley among rose-coloured cliffs

- Climb a dune before dawn and watch the first light spread across the sand
Itinerary, day by day

1
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Dades valley
Pickup around 8:00 at your riad or hotel and straight up into the High Atlas. The road climbs through walnut terraces and Berber villages to the Tichka pass, then drops into a drier, redder world. After lunch near Aït Ben Haddou you walk through the old ksar with time to climb to the granary at the top. Short stop in Ouarzazate, then east along the "road of a thousand kasbahs" past Skoura's palm grove to the Dades valley for dinner and the night.
About 8 hours including stops · Overnight: a hotel or guesthouse in the Dades valley

2
Dades gorge → Todra gorge → Merzouga → camel ride to camp
A morning drive up the Dades gorge to its famous hairpins, then on to Tinghir and a walk on foot through the narrowest part of the Todra gorge. The afternoon road passes the date palms of Erfoud and Rissani before the first dunes appear on the horizon. In Merzouga you leave the main luggage in the vehicle, mount the camels and ride into Erg Chebbi as the light softens. Dinner, music around the fire and a sky full of stars at camp.
About 6 hours including stops · Camel ride about 1 hour · Overnight: standard desert camp in Erg Chebbi (luxury upgrade available)

3
Sunrise in the dunes → back to Marrakech
Wake early to climb the nearest dune for sunrise, then ride or walk back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. The return crosses the Anti-Atlas via the quiet road through Tazzarine and N'Kob, rejoins Ouarzazate and climbs back over the Tichka pass. Expect arrival in Marrakech in the evening.

What to bring
A small overnight bag for the camp, a warm layer for the evening, a scarf against sand and sun, sunscreen and a head torch. Our guide to a night in a Sahara camp has the full packing list.
Best season
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. From December to February the days are sunny but the desert night can approach 0 °C; in July and August afternoons often pass 40 °C.
The camp
The standard camp has tents with electricity and shared bathrooms (no Wi-Fi). Upgrade to the luxury camp for a tent with its own private bathroom and Wi-Fi.
Travelling with children
Children travel well on this route if you break up the long third day; on a private tour we add extra stops. Children pay 5% less than the adult price.

Questions about the 3-day Merzouga tour
Is three days enough for Merzouga from Marrakech?
Yes, and it is the most popular length — but the last day is a long drive. If you prefer shorter days, choose the 4-day version.
How long is the camel ride?
About 1 hour each way, at walking pace. If you'd rather not ride, we can take you to camp by 4x4.
Can I finish the tour in Fes instead of Marrakech?
Yes — book the Marrakech to Fes desert tour, which follows the same first two days and ends in Fes.
What is the difference between the private and the group tour?
The route is the same. Private means your own vehicle and driver, any start date and stops when you want them. The small-group tour shares the vehicle with other travellers — maximum 17 people, departures every day — from €110 per person. A private tour is priced per group: €200 per day for your vehicle and driver plus €45 per person per night for accommodation. For 2 travellers on this 3-day, 2-night tour that comes to €780 in total (€390 per person).
Is there Wi-Fi and electricity at the camp?
The standard camp has electricity but no Wi-Fi; the luxury camp adds a private bathroom with hot water, charging outlets and Wi-Fi. Phone signal in the dunes is usually patchy — part of the charm.
