Overview
This Marrakech desert tour takes 4 days instead of 3, and that one extra night changes the whole trip. Merzouga lies roughly 560 km from Marrakech. On a shorter loop, the return happens in a single long push. Here we break it in two, so no day behind the wheel is a marathon and you get a full morning in the dunes instead of leaving straight after sunrise.
The way out follows the classic road: the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, the kasbahs of Skoura and the roses of Kelaat M'Gouna, then the Dades and Todra gorges. You reach Erg Chebbi in the afternoon with time to settle in before the camel ride to camp. Day 3 belongs to the desert and its people: Gnawa music in Khamlia, a nomad family, the sand itself. Only then do you head west, by a quiet road through Alnif and N'Kob, to sleep near Ouarzazate.
It suits families, travellers who get tired in a car, and anyone who wants to see the villages around the dunes rather than just the dunes. Before you go, read our Merzouga desert travel guide for what the area is like across the seasons.

1
Marrakech → Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Kelaat M'Gouna → Dades valley
We collect you from your riad or hotel around 8:00 and head for the High Atlas. Above the walnut groves the road tops out at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, about 2,260 m, before dropping south. Lunch and a walk up through Aït Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar listed by UNESCO in 1987. A short look at Ouarzazate, the town film crews call the door of the desert, then the palm grove and kasbahs of Skoura. In Kelaat M'Gouna, the Rose valley, you stop at a cooperative where rose water and oils are made. Evening in the Dades valley.

Dades gorge → Todra gorge → Erfoud and Rissani → Merzouga camp

The road continues past the date palms of Erfoud and Rissani. You reach Merzouga by mid-afternoon, so there is no rush: time for tea, a dune climb, then the camel ride into Erg Chebbi as the light turns gold. Dinner, drums and stars at camp.

Morning around the dunes → Alnif → N'Kob → Ouarzazate area
Sunrise from the sand, breakfast, then a slow morning in the villages at the foot of the dunes. In Khamlia, musicians play Gnawa music over mint tea. You can try sandboarding on a steep slope, sit with a nomad family in their tent, and, if recent rain has filled it, see the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji. After lunch we drive west through Alnif and N'Kob, at the foot of the Jbel Saghro, to spend the night near Ouarzazate.

Good to know before you go
What to bring
A light bag for the camp night, a fleece for the evening, a scarf against sun and sand, sunglasses, sunscreen and a head torch. Our Sahara camp packing guide covers the details.
Best season
Spring and autumn are the easiest months. In winter the days are bright but desert nights can drop close to 0 °C; in high summer afternoons can go above 40 °C, so the slow morning in the dunes starts early.
Where you sleep
Dades: a hotel or guesthouse. Desert: a standard camp with electricity and shared bathrooms (no Wi-Fi), or upgrade to the luxury camp for a private bathroom and Wi-Fi. Last night: a hotel in the Ouarzazate area.
Visiting families respectfully
The nomad and Khamlia visits are informal. Ask before taking photos, especially of women and children, and follow your driver's lead.

Questions about the 4-day desert tour
Is the 4-day tour worth it over the 3-day one?
If you dislike long hours in a car, yes. The 3-day Merzouga tour ends with a single drive of about 10 hours; here that return is split in two, and you gain a morning in the villages around the dunes.
How many hours do we drive each day?
Roughly 8 hours with stops on day 1, 6 on day 2, 5 to 6 on the afternoon of day 3 and 4 to 5 on day 4. Times vary with weather and how often you want to stop.
Is there water in Dayet Srji lake?
Only after rain. It is a seasonal lake and is dry for much of the year. We check before the morning and leave it out if it is empty.
Do I have to ride a camel or try sandboarding?
No. Sandboarding is optional, and if you would rather not ride, you can reach the camp by 4x4. The camel ride lasts about 1 hour each way.
Can we change the route or the stops?
On a private tour, yes: extra nights, different stops, a later start. For full flexibility, book a private driver in Morocco. The small-group tour follows the set route, with a maximum of 17 travellers and departures every day.
What is the difference between the private and the group tour?
The route is the same. The small-group tour shares the vehicle with other travellers — maximum 17 people, departures every day — from €200 per person. A private tour is priced per group: €200 per day for your own vehicle and driver plus €45 per person per night for accommodation. For 2 travellers on this 4-day, 3-night tour that comes to €1,070 in total (€535 per person).
Is this tour suitable for children?
It is one of our easier routes for families because of the shorter days. Bring snacks and layers; desert evenings get cool. Children pay 5% less than the adult price, and child seats are available on request.
