Overview
This 2-day Marrakech desert tour is for travellers with one night to give to the south. Zagora lies roughly 360 km from Marrakech, over the High Atlas and down the Draa valley, a long green ribbon of date palms and mud-brick villages. You drive there on day one, ride a camel out to camp for the evening, sleep under the desert sky and drive back on day two.
One honest point before you book: the dunes around Zagora, such as those at Tinfou, are small. They are fine for a sunset camel ride and a quiet night, but they are not the tall sand seas you see in photos of the Sahara. Those are Erg Chegaga, beyond M'Hamid, which is too far for a two-day round trip, and Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, with dunes up to about 150 m, which needs at least three days. If big dunes are the reason you are coming, take the 3-day Merzouga desert tour instead.
What this trip does well is the road. You cross the Tichka pass, walk through Aït Ben Haddou, and follow the Draa past old ksour and palm groves that most visitors only see from a bus window. It suits a short stay in Morocco, or anyone who wants a real night out of the city without three long days in a vehicle.
Highlights
- Cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, about 2,260 m up
- Walk the lanes of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar since 1987
- Pass through Ouarzazate, the film-studio town known as the door of the desert
- Follow the Draa valley from Agdz, past the earthen ksar of Tamnougalt
- Ride a camel to camp as the low dunes turn gold
- Dinner, drums by the fire and a sky thick with stars, then sunrise at camp
Itinerary, day by day
-
1
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Agdz → Zagora, camel ride to camp
Pickup around 8:00 at your riad or hotel and straight into the High Atlas. The road climbs past walnut terraces and Berber villages to the Tichka pass, then drops into a drier, redder landscape. At Aït Ben Haddou you have time to cross the riverbed and walk up through the ksar to the old granary at the top. After a short stop in Ouarzazate the road crosses a second, lower range and comes down into Agdz, where the Draa valley opens out. From here it is palms almost all the way: the walls of Tamnougalt, then village after village along the river. Near Zagora there is time for a photo at the "Tombouctou 52 jours" sign, a reminder that caravans once left from here for Timbuktu. You meet the camels at the edge of the dunes and ride out to camp for sunset, dinner and music around the fire.
About 7–8 hours including stops · Camel ride about 1 hour · Overnight: standard desert camp in the Zagora area (luxury upgrade available)

Sunrise at camp → Draa valley → Ouarzazate → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech
Get up early and climb the nearest dune to watch the light come over the palms. After breakfast you ride or walk back to the vehicle and head north up the Draa valley, stopping wherever the river and the ksour make you want to. Lunch is around Ouarzazate, then the long climb back over the Tichka pass and down to the Haouz plain. You reach Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on stops.

Best season
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. From December to February the days are bright but the night can get close to 0 °C; in July and August afternoons often pass 40 °C.
The camp
The standard camp near Zagora has tents with electricity and shared bathrooms (no Wi-Fi). Upgrade to the luxury camp for a tent with its own private bathroom and Wi-Fi.
Two long drives
Each day is roughly 7–8 hours with stops. The Tichka road has many bends; if you get carsick, sit in front and tell your driver.

Questions about the 2-day Zagora tour
Is 2 days enough for the Sahara?
It is enough for a taste: a camel ride, a night in camp and a desert sunrise. But most of the two days is spent on the road, and the dunes near Zagora are small. For the tall dunes of the Sahara, allow at least three days and go to Merzouga.
Zagora or Merzouga: which should I choose?
Choose Zagora if you only have two days and enjoy palm groves and kasbahs as much as sand. Choose Merzouga if you want the big dunes of Erg Chebbi: the 3-day Merzouga tour is the shortest option, and the 4-day Merzouga tour is more relaxed.
Do I have to ride a camel?
No, it is optional. You can walk beside the caravan instead. Tell us when you book.
How cold does it get at night?
From November to February the temperature can drop close to 0 °C after dark, so bring a fleece, a hat and warm socks either way.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Many children love the camels and the campfire, but two long drives back to back are tiring. On a private tour we add more stops and adjust the pace. If time is short, the Agafay desert day trip gives younger children a desert evening without the long road. Children pay 5% less than the adult price.
What is the difference between the private and the group tour?
The route is the same. The small-group tour shares the vehicle with other travellers — maximum 17 people, departures every day — from €80 per person. A private tour is priced per group: €200 per day for your own vehicle and driver plus €45 per person per night for accommodation. For 2 travellers on this 2-day, 1-night tour that comes to €490 in total (€245 per person).
Can I see Erg Chegaga on this trip?
No. Erg Chegaga lies beyond M'Hamid, much further south than Zagora, and does not fit into two days. If you want to go there, we can plan a longer route with a private driver in Morocco.
