Overview
This Marrakech desert day trip fits into half a day: no dawn alarm, no long road, and you sleep in your own bed. The Agafay desert lies about 40 km from the city, roughly 45 minutes by car, so you leave after lunch, ride a camel across the plateau, watch the sun drop behind the hills, eat dinner in a tent camp and are back in Marrakech the same night.
One thing to know before you book: Agafay is a stony desert, not a sand sea. Picture bare, rolling hills and a wide plateau in shades of beige and ochre, with the High Atlas on the horizon, often white with snow in winter. There are no sand dunes here. If dunes are the picture in your head, you need at least one night away: the 2-day Zagora desert trip reaches small dunes, and the 3-day Merzouga desert tour takes you to the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi.
What Agafay does well is space, silence and evening light. The city noise falls away within minutes, the sky opens up, and on a clear evening the mountains turn pink as the plateau goes dark. Close by, the reservoir of Lalla Takerkoust shows up as a surprising patch of turquoise between the hills.

Your afternoon, step by step
-
1
Pickup in Marrakech
Your driver meets you at your riad or hotel. If your riad sits deep in the medina where cars cannot go, we agree on the nearest gate or square. The start time moves with the seasons so that you always reach the plateau before sunset.

The drive out to the Agafay plateau
The suburbs thin out into olive groves and small farms, then the ground turns bare and stony and the road starts to roll over low hills. Ask your driver to pull over at the first viewpoint: it is the moment most travellers realise how quickly the city disappears.
About 45 minutes · about 40 km

3
Camel ride across the plateau
The camels are saddled and waiting near the camp. A cameleer leads the line on foot, so you need no riding experience; just lean back as the camel stands up. The path follows the ridges, with the plateau dropping away on one side and the mountains ahead.
Camel ride about 1 hour

Sunset over the Atlas
Find a spot on a ridge and stay still for a while. As the sun goes down the hills shift from beige to copper, and the Atlas peaks hold a pink glow for a few minutes after the plateau has gone into shadow. Keep your phone charged for this part.

Dinner in the tent camp
Back at camp the lanterns are lit. Dinner is a slow, shared Moroccan meal: a spread of small salads, then a tagine or couscous, and fruit with mint tea to finish. Tell us about any diet when you book so the kitchen can plan for it.

6
Music and fire under the stars
After dinner, musicians play drums and strings around the fire and a fire performer takes the stage. Away from the city lights, the sky over the plateau fills with far more stars than you see from a Marrakech rooftop.

7
Back to Marrakech
The same 45-minute drive in the dark, with the city lights growing on the horizon. Your driver drops you back where the day began.

Good to know before you go
What to bring
A warm layer for after dark, a scarf or hat against sun and dust, sunscreen, and some cash for drinks or tips. Leave big bags at your hotel: you only need a small daypack.
Best season
Spring and autumn give mild evenings. Winter brings the clearest Atlas views and snow on the peaks, but nights can drop close to 0 °C. In July and August the days can pass 40 °C, so the cooler evening hours are the time to be out.
The camp
Dinner is served in a tent camp on the Agafay plateau. On a private trip we can suggest a different camp.

Questions about the Agafay desert day trip
Is Agafay a real desert?
Yes, in the sense of dry, open, almost treeless land, but it is a stony desert of hills and plateau with no sand dunes. For dunes, choose the 2-day Zagora trip (small dunes) or the 3-day tour to the Merzouga dunes, where Erg Chebbi rises to around 150 m.
How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
About 40 km, which takes roughly 45 minutes each way depending on traffic leaving the city.
What should I wear?
Long trousers or a long skirt are more comfortable on a camel, with closed shoes for the stony ground. Bring a jumper or jacket all year: once the sun sets the temperature falls fast, and from November to February it can get close to freezing.
Is this trip suitable for children?
It is one of the easiest desert outings for families: a short drive and back the same night. Young children can usually share a camel with a parent. Children pay 5% less than the adult price.
Is there a vegetarian dinner?
Yes. Moroccan cooking adapts easily, with vegetable tagine, couscous with vegetables and plenty of salads. Let us know when you book.
